In
Cuba there are two luxurious golf courses with professional characteristics.
The first is the Havana Golf Club, often called the "DiploClub"
located in Boyeros, just a 5-minute drive from Havana's city centre.
The course is a working 9 holes but is under developement to increase
the holes to 18. Whether you play golf or not it is a great place to
spend a beautiful day. Beyond the Club you will find a swimming pool,
bowling alley, two bars, supermarket and one very good restaurant which
over views over the course. Set in a miniature forest with natural streams,
this course offers many challenges. The club is open from Tuesdays to
Sundays during the whole day. Clubs, personal caddies, trainers and
balls are all available at reasonable prices.
The second is the Varadero Golf Club, situated in Varadero, Matanzas.
This 18-hole course was completed in 1998, has received international
accolades and is home to many international events. It is situated on
the Varadero peninsula a beautiful 23 km beach resort with it's own
international airport and just 120 km's from Havana by car. The setting
is unique as the course crests over the white sand beaches stretching
out below. The clubhouse is also unique as it is none other than the
"Dupont" mansion built in the early 1930's. The course offers
an exquisite French restaurant and the Xanadu 19th hole bar and cafeteria.
Real golfers can even stay in the limited roomed "Dupont"
mansion for that true golf experience. Clubs, personal caddies, trainers
and balls are all available at reasonable prices.
The
island of "Saetia" in western Cuba and off the coast of Santiago
de Cuba is truly an unusual place. Over 40 years ago antelopes, zebras,
deers and other animals of African origin were brought to this remote
island as a type of experiment.
